About Us
The Tantramar Region of New Brunswick is home to windswept marshes, a lively arts & culture scene, a top-notch university, and...many pickleball enthusiasts! Pickleball brings together a wide range of players, young and old, who enjoy playing this fun sport with a great social side.
A Brief History
In 2015/16 a small group of pickleball players started out in the Mount Allison (MTA) gym. The group was fortunate enough to have a few folks interested in outside play as well. They asked the Town of Sackville to paint some lines on the single tennis court (the one we use today) that would be suitable for pickleball. This was great and the interest did improve a little. The group had some discussions about building some proper outdoor courts. They investigated the cost of materials and had discussions with the Director of Recreation for the Town, he was quite supportive and suggested that the group submit a proposal for the project. They put together a proposal to have the single tennis court turned into 4 dedicated pickleball courts. In the Fall of 2019, Kirk Meldrum made a presentation to the Town Council to have the Town supply the materials with the group providing the labor to complete the project. In the Spring of 2020, the project was approved. A gentleman from Sainte Antoine, was familiar with the process and offered his advice. And in the summer of 2020 a group of volunteers, along with the support of the Town and the great help of its employees, completed the new courts as you see them today. The folks within the pickleball group volunteer to keep things running quite well.
Our players come from various communities around the Tantramar region and beyond. The group boasts of its friendly attitude, and pleasant atmosphere where players of all levels (from beginner to advanced) are welcome and can enjoy many fun and challenging games. In addition to our regular group of players, we welcome any/all players from near and far to join us for some pickleball fun.
We are also very fortunate to have the Mount Allison University and Salem Elementary School gyms available to us. The Town has been extremely supportive of pickleball in Sackville. It has provided nets, paddles, balls, and wind screens for our use without question or cost. Our only responsibility has been to look after the equipment and pay a small drop-in fee to help with the costs. We have 4 high quality outside courts that are second to none, and 9 inside courts (6 @ MTA & 3 @ Salem) with varying times that provide everyone with the opportunity to play whether working or retired.
We all look forward to many years of pickleball fun with our present and future friends. Whether you live in town, are from a nearby community, or are visiting from much further away, come and join us for a game or two, or three, or four or …………. much more!
