A Concern from Paul

Hi Everyone,

Here is an issue that I find bothersome.  Others may not feel the same and that’s OK, but here goes.

I recently became aware of the evening session that takes place every Wednesday evening in the Mount A Gym.  A group of players get together and play even though we have our regular evening play on the outdoor courts.  I understand that this group is by invitation only, and not open to just anyone.  One of the mainstays that all players within our group have embraced since we started many years ago is the inclusivity we have promoted.  We have invited one and all, regardless of skill level or age, to join us for some pickleball fun and comradery.  We have adamantly opposed any divisions within our group and have made sure everyone gets to play with everyone else.  We have been regarded as one of the more friendly and inclusive pickleball groups around.

While it is true that each person has his/her right to choose when and where to play, this MTA play is not available to all of us and in fact reduces our own numbers on the outside courts.  We have a great group and the thought that some division may be creeping in is very troublesome to me.  A lot of work has gone into the setup that we currently have with everyone able to enjoy the game, unlike the troubles other groups have faced when divisions started to creep in.  We established the evening sessions to make time available for those who couldn’t attend the day sessions. 

I am only one voice, but I have heard from some others too and feel that it is incumbent on me to use this platform to bring my thoughts to everyone’s attention.  Hopefully my concern will bring about more discussion and bring awareness to all members of our group.  If I am off base on this that’s OK with me, and I would be happy chat with you about my feelings on this.

As for my concern, it is up to you all to decide how our group functions.  I am not speaking on behalf of the committee.  I am one voice, one concerned pickleball player who has been around for a while and hopes that we will continue playing for a long time to come as one group of friends enjoying pickleball.
